How to get cited in Google AI Mode

AI Mode is Google's conversational search tab. It breaks a question into subtopics, runs many searches at once, and writes one answer with links to the web. Ranking first for the exact query matters less than being the best page for one of those sub-searches. We track whether AI Mode names your brand, what it says about you, and whose pages it links.

How Google AI Mode picks what to cite

  • Uses query fan-out: it breaks the question into subtopics and issues many searches at the same time on the user's behalf (Google, May 2025)
  • Runs on a custom version of Gemini inside Google Search, grounded in Google's own index (Google, May 2025)
  • A page is eligible if it is indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no extra requirements, special files or markup needed (Google Search Central)
  • Because fan-out covers subtopics, it can link a wider and more varied set of pages than the classic results for the same query (Google Search Central)

Where brands fall short

Common gaps brands have for Google AI Mode

Pages blocked from snippets

nosnippet tags, tight max-snippet limits or indexing problems take a page out of AI Mode's pool. It uses the same eligibility rules as regular Google Search.

One page per keyword, nothing for the subtopics

Fan-out searches for comparisons, prices, alternatives and use cases. A site with one page per head term misses the sub-searches where the links are picked.

Assuming AI Overviews coverage carries over

AI Mode and AI Overviews can show different answers and links for the same question. Being cited in one doesn't mean you're cited in the other, so check both.

How it compares

Google AI Mode vs other AI engines

vs Google AI Overview

AI Overviews is a summary at the top of the results page; AI Mode is a separate conversational tab with follow-up questions. Same index and eligibility rules, different answers and links.

vs Gemini

Gemini is Google's standalone assistant; AI Mode lives inside Search and searches for every question. Optimizing for one helps the other, but the outputs differ.

vs ChatGPT Search

AI Mode reads Google's index; ChatGPT Search draws on third-party search providers and partner content. Your rank on one doesn't guarantee a citation on the other.
