SEO Fundamentals
The six ideas everything else in SEO is built on. Learn these well and the rest of the roadmap stops feeling like a thousand tricks and starts feeling like one thing you understand.
Every discipline has a handful of ideas that everything else sits on top of. Learn those properly and the field stops looking like a thousand disconnected tactics and starts looking like one thing you actually understand. This chapter is those ideas for SEO.
There are six of them, and they are not a random list. They are the whole job, in order. First you understand what SEO actually is and how the machine works underneath it. Then you learn to find the words people search, and to study the sites already winning them. Then you shape a page into the best answer, make sure a machine can reach and read it, and finally earn the trust that makes it rank. Content, technical, authority: the three pillars, plus the research that aims them at the right target.
Work through them in order if you are new. Jump to the gaps if you are not. Either way, everything later in this roadmap, the process, the specialisations, the AI-search work, rests on these six. Get them right and the hard chapters get a great deal easier.
The six fundamentals
In recommended reading order. Each is a full, standalone guide.
Introduction to SEO
What SEO actually is, and how crawling, indexing and ranking really work, told through a Metro surveyor and his notebook.
Keyword Research
Find the exact words people search, and learn to read volume, difficulty and intent like a practitioner.
Competition Analysis
Study the sites already winning your keywords, and find the content gaps you can walk straight into.
Content Optimisation
Shape a page into the clearest, most complete answer to its search, for the reader and the machine at once.
Technical SEO
Make sure a machine can reach, read and understand every page, the plumbing behind the walls.
Link Building
Earn the references from other sites that give search engines a reason to trust you.
How to work through this chapter
If you are brand new, read them top to bottom; each one leans on the one before it. If you already do SEO, treat this as a checklist and jump to whichever fundamental you have never properly nailed down. And do not just read. Pick one real page you own and apply each guide to it as you go. The ideas only become skills once you have used them on something that matters to you.
